Every time you swipe your credit card outside the United States — or make an online purchase in a foreign currency — most issuers tack on a foreign transaction fee of 2.7% to 3%. On a $5,000 vacation, that's up to $150 in hidden fees. Cards with no foreign transaction fees eliminate this charge entirely.

Why It Matters

Foreign transaction fees are among the easiest credit card costs to avoid. If you travel internationally even once a year — or regularly shop from overseas retailers — having a no-FTF card in your wallet is essential. The savings add up quickly, especially for frequent travelers.

What to Look For

  • Visa or Mastercard network — accepted more widely abroad than American Express or Discover.
  • Chip-and-PIN capability — some countries (especially in Europe) prefer PIN-based transactions over signature.
  • Travel-oriented rewards — many no-FTF cards also earn bonus points on travel and dining, maximizing your spending abroad.

How Foreign Transaction Fees Work

The fee is typically charged by the card issuer (not the network) and appears as a separate line item or built into the exchange rate. Cards marketed as “no foreign transaction fee” waive this charge completely. The currency conversion still uses the network's exchange rate (Visa/Mastercard rates are typically within 0.1% of the interbank rate).

Tips for Using Cards Abroad

  • Always pay in the local currency when given the option — dynamic currency conversion (DCC) by the merchant adds an extra 3-7% markup.
  • Notify your issuer before traveling to avoid fraud holds on your account.
  • Carry a backup card from a different network in case one isn't accepted.
